Michael from Cohen Web Design here... A little bi Michael from Cohen Web Design here... A little bit of a different tip here; however, this tip goes hand-in-hand with proper website development. Google My Business is a tool developed by Google to list businesses accurately based on consumer searches. When you type "restaurants near me..." into the Google Search engine, it utilizes the Google My Business listings in your area in order to show you the restaurants. If your restaurant is NOT listed then you will NOT show up in this search. Thus, tons of revenue is left on the table. This is just one example. If you do not have a Google My Business page, you are far behind the competition. On this listing, people can navigate to your business (if applicable), leave reviews, click-to-call, and navigate directly to your website. Google My Business listings are FREE to create and maintain -- there is literally nothing to lose. Configuring Google My Business is quite simple. Step 1: Make a Google account (if your business does not already have one). This can be a simple gmail. Step 2: Go to business.google.com Step 3: Create your profile to your liking Step 4: Verify your listing (usually done through a postcard in the mail). You cannot send this postcard to a PO Box! Step 5: Wait for the postcard to come in the mail and verify the code that was sent Step 6: Go to business.google.com and click Manage now. Step 7: Go to Info and configure this page accurately and completely. If you are a client of mine, Google My Business configuration is included in your fee. #googlemybusiness #website #webdevelopment #business #businesstip
Michael from Cohen Web Design here... When users Michael from Cohen Web Design here... When users enter your website, they are essentially interacting between your web server and their own Internet network. How do ensure this connection is secure? And why should you care? To answer the first question about ensuring security, by far the most important step would be implementing a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). SSL is a modern encryption protocol that is becoming the industry standard. This protocol is usually handled by your webhost FREE of charge. If your webhost does not support SSL, it is time to switch. To answer the second question, your users will be notified if you are not using SSL. In most cases, they will be met with a "Not Secured" tag on their browser's address bar. In other cases, they won't even be able to access your website unless they take advanced measures. You are losing viewers by not implementing SSL. Furthermore, your users are at risk with any of the data they send to your webserver. Webhosts that provide free SSL are most likely providing a Lets Encrypt certificate. This certificate is certainly satisfactory! In short, if your host does not provide SSL -- LEAVE! Otherwise, read up on implementing SSL on your current webhost's platform. All of my clients receive SSL certificates, so if you are a client of mine there is no need to worry.
Michael from Cohen Web Design here... When creati Michael from Cohen Web Design here... When creating a website, solid media content is crucial. You can use the most elegant language available, but if it is paired with low-quality images you will surely drive away customers... Do you have a high-quality DSLR camera? If not, that is OKAY! There are a plethora of excellent stock image websites which require no attribution or payment. Essentially, a stock image is an image that one person owns and makes available to others on the Internet. Some require payment, some require attribution, and some require neither! It is extremely important that you understand that you cannot simply search for a photo on Google and use it on your website. Most of the time, you will be in violation of copyright laws. It is important that you understand the rights of the owner, usually displayed on a license page. To combat this, here are some of my favorite stock image websites! Make sure to read the license page on each website. 1. Pexels (.com)
On Pexels, images are free to use and modify without attribution. 2. Pixabay (.com)

Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Nothing is Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Nothing is more frustrating than a slow-loading website! (See Tip #4 for how to test your website's speed) Now that we know how to test our website... What if it is underperforming? How can we fix this? Well... There are three major factors to consider. 1. Have you optimized your images? Image optimization refers to making image filesizes smaller, so that they take less time to load for the user. Now, there is a caveat here... If you make your living off of the quality of your images (i.e. Photographer), you may prioritize the quality of your images over loading speed. If so, this step may be skippable. Otherwise, look into image compression! 2. Who is your webhost? Just like in fitness, the "you cannot outwork a bad diet" rule applies here... You cannot go faster than what your host allows you to! If you are with a host that caps your data transfer rate or if you are with a host that generally underperforms, you must switch. 3. Are you using a bloated theme? Many themes available online for builders (WordPress, Wix, Weebly) are BLOATED! Essentially, there are more elements than necessary loading on your webpage (and you may not even know it). This, in turn, causes the end user to experience a slow website. If ANY or ALL of these apply to you... Your customers are growing further and further away from your brand.
Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Search Engi Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a buzzword nowadays. Without a doubt, it is incredibly important to the success of your business -- but just how complicated is it? And should you shell out thousands of dollars for optimization work? Well... It's complicated. If you want to be the best-of-the-best, then it is expensive and complex; however, if you simply want to increase your chances of being seen in your local area -- it isn't all that complicated. Step 1: Use amazing keywords on your website. Are you a clothing boutique? Focus your language on articles of clothing, brands, etc... Step 2: Along with your keywords, overstate your location! Are you located in Sullivan County? Constantly say things like: Proudly serving residents of Sullivan County ... Our clothing is prepared by hand in Sullivan County ... The residents of Sullivan County have never been happier... etc Step 3: Make a Google My Business Page. Google My Business is an AMAZING free tool by Google which allows users to find you simply by searching things like "clothing near me." Step 4: Submit your website to Google Search Console (a little more complex than the other steps). Google Search Console allows Google to manually index your website whenever you request it. Indexing your site is CRUCIAL to being listed on the Google search engine. Step 5: Integrate Google Maps/Google My Business onto your website! Tying your website and your location together is, arguably, the most important factor in SEO. Is there more to it? Of course. However, if you follow these steps you will be MUCH better off. Laziness kills businesses, go the extra mile!
Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Nothing is Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Nothing is more frustrating than dealing with a website that is SLOW. Imagine you were looking to book a vacation NOW and the booking website is loading at a snails pace, would you stick around? NO. So why expect YOUR customers to deal with a slow website? If you pay a website developer to make you the prettiest website there is but it loads slowly, you are not going to translate clicks into revenue. So how do you test your website for its page speed? EASY. Google PageSpeed Insights (https://pagespeed.web.dev/). This tool developed by Google tests your website's speed on Mobile and Desktop. If your developer did a good job, expect small differences between the Mobile and Desktop scores. A score below 80% is absolutely unacceptable and requires maintenance. Don't let the customer deal with the incompetence of the developer. Pingdom is also a fantastic tool to supplement PageSpeed Insights for testing your loading speeds (https://tools.pingdom.com/). These tests are mandatory before a website is published with Cohen Web Design. Your website does not go live until it is reaching 90% speed levels. #website #webdesign #Google #pagespeed #cohenwebdesign
Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Years ago, Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Years ago, all websites were programmed from scratch using HTML, CSS, and (maybe) JavaScript. Being proficient in these languages is still GREAT. But is it necessary for your business? NO. In order to maintain a successful website, the business owner does not need to know ANYTHING about programming (at all). This is where a Content Management System (CMS) comes into play... A CMS allows the website editor to make changes using a front-end interface (think something as simple as Microsoft Word); thus, no programming experience is required. Let me, the developer, do all the heavy lifting to configure your CMS optimally! What CMS options are out there? Too many! If you're running an eCommerce website for your brand, I'd typically recommend Shopify as your CMS. Otherwise, WordPress is the best there is. The other CMS options, think Squarespace, are also great -- but WordPress still takes the cake. The options and configurations are endless. I have years of experience developing WordPress websites, all of which are lightning fast ⚡. #CMS #WordPress #website #websitedeveloper #webdesign #cohenwebdesign #binghamton #hudsonvalley #broomecounty #orangecounty #sullivancounty
Michael from Cohen Web Design here... The first s Michael from Cohen Web Design here... The first step to making a great website is choosing a great domain name. This domain is not only the name that others will know you by, but also the name that Google will know you by. Google is the top search engine in the world -- so optimizing your name for Google is vital. Domain names can have up to 63 characters in it! By no means should you be anywhere close to 63 characters... Try to aim anywhere between 6-14 characters, for instance: cohenwebdesign.com has 14 characters. Why does this matter? Nobody wants to type long domain names into their search bar. Even if they are willing to type it, there is far more room for error than with a shorter name! Now that you selected a domain name... Where should you register it? Without a question, choose Namecheap or Google Domains. These two providers are extremely reliable and... well.. CHEAP! A domain typically costs no more than $12/yr without any promotional pricing at either of these registrars. Whatever you do, avoid registars with bad reputations...
Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Choosing th Michael from Cohen Web Design here... Choosing the right website host is integral in ensuring your site is up-to-par. Many people choose the most advertised website hosts, such as GoDaddy. If they have money to advertise, and have been around for decades, they must be the best... right? NO. Choosing the right website host does not mean selecting those with the largest advertising budgets. The best of the best are constantly analyzed by performance experts. If you choose the wrong host, you may be paying more for less performance. Cohen Web Design endorses two stand-out website hosting providers: SiteGround and VeeroTech. These providers have consistently brought high-end performance to the table for reasonable rates. Furthermore, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, these companies have not unethically raised their pricing tiers. NOTE: Cohen Web Design is not affiliated with either of these hosts. I do not make money from using these hosts for projects.
